I'm no expert, but I was told the plant you are referring to in a type of aster. In a Bermuda grass yard I just use a hard-tined rake, it works great. but might not be as easy in St Augustine. I just treated the yard with corn gluten meal and will again in the spring so hopefully I won't have the problem in the future.
Is the leaf/stem color a deep green (almost blue-green)? Does is grow mostly flat, spreading to the size of a saucer? Does it have a single root? Very easy to pull after a rain?

I had the same thing in my St. Aug the past 2 springs... blue-green, kind of stiff & wirey, spreads low and wide and threads itself under the St. Aug runners too.
I have had to pull everyone of them, but have noticed that if the tap root breaks off, it will often come back. Water well first or do it after a rain. I did a heavy CGM application in the areas I saw them and it was waaaaaaaaaaay less this year.
I have tried long and hard to find out what it is, to no avail. I'll try and take a pic if I find anymore. The flowers are miniscule... if the get that far. I can see no aster that even comes close... links anyone???
BTW... I have noticed they flourish on the dryer parts of my yard that get more sun than the rest... but the grass is healthy everywhere.
