Hi to all. I just found this place and I really enjoy reading all the posts.

I've always liked "playing" in the dirt and planting the maple seeds that fall down from the trees. But, now it is time to " get serious " as my wife puts it and plant a vegetable garden Boy, have I got a lot to learn!

I look forward to posting and maybe, just maybe giving a helping hand as well.

Here in Ohio, we had a frost advisory for last night/this morning. I hope that's all over with.

My plot is 4' by 12' and has about a 2" sand base. I plan on doing a raised bed and adding soil and compost. I read about using newspapper to possibly control weeds. I'd put it down before the soil, on top of the sand.

I kinda feel like I'm getting a late start??

Oh yea, tomatoes, green peppers, peas, cucumbers and onions are on the menu. Maybe some others, I wouldn't mind trying to grow watermelons.

Sounds like a plan to me.
Regarding the newspaper: Yes that will retard the weeds but just remember weeds will take hold just below the soil level. The newspaper will block the root development as it will your garden plantings. So I recond you'll have to punch a hole for your good seeds.

Mulch is always one of the best ways to control those pesky weeds.
