Three years ago, we bought our property which has several very large pine trees that have absolutely no root flare. They seem healthy. Do all trees need the root flare exposed?

Pines do have flares but often aren't as dramatic as other trees. Many times the flares are covered by a buildup of pine needles. Your trees will definitely respond to exposing the flares.
