Merry Christmas,
I'm trying to learn to grow vegetables from seed, and would like some advice on preparing the soil. Our land is thin, poor soil on top of limestone rock. Last year I planted tomato seeds, started indoors, and they grew to about 3" tall, then the hail beat them to smithereens! So, this year will be try # 2 with seeds. What do you suggest as to soil prep? I read David Halls FAQ's but they were mainly for the lawn and not the garden. Last year I believe I tilled in compost and some dry molasses. What should I add to the soil and how soon before planting a spring garden? Also, I read that shade cloth is good for tomato's when the summer heat arrives, and gives you additional time before they stop producing. If anyone has any experience with shade cloth let me know.
