If it is Bermuda grass, do not till. You will never get rid of it! If that is what you have, remove the top two inches with a sod cutter and throw it in the compost pile with some liquid molasses or microbes (or both).

Otherwise, I believe it would be best to actually cut (chop) it out and let it lay there until you are ready to plant something else. "Weeds" are storehouses of nutrients the soil needs. Even after planting, you can mulch with the chopped material.
