Hello, I posted this in the wrong forum so I though I would re-post it here.

I have a patch of grass that looks dead to me. I am not sure what to do at this point. Can I overseed or do I need to cut this patch out and re-sod? (You can see the only thing growing/green are the few weeds!)

I am new to TX and am not sure which type of grass I have. Can someone decipher from the pics? Do I have Bermuda or St. Augustine?

I have been fertilizing with Soy Bean Meal, watering deeply once per week, and mowing on a low level.

From this distance it is hard to see the details enough to comment on what it is. Does it have runners over the top of the ground about the size of spaghetti (indicating bermuda) or runners more the size of a small soda straw (St Augustine)? St Augustine is coarse bladed while bermuda is fine bladed.

Maybe a picture will help. Ignore the grass on top (centipede) and look at the lower grass (St Augustine).



Before you mow it St Augustine has the characteristic rounded blades. Actually bermuda looks more like the centipede than it does the St Aug. Bermuda blades are a little finer.

In any case I am thinking the grass has just not come out of dormancy yet. Water it once a month for now and prepare to increase the watering frequency to once a week by June. Water deeply when you water. I water for 3-5 hours per zone with my water pressure and sprinkler setup.

I thought it was dormant too, but I was looking at pics we took before moving in last year and the spot was visible in the fall as well (all the other grass deep green). That is what made me post the first time.

Would there be something I should do to fill this patch in? Or will the Bermuda spread in time?

It is hard to tell from your picture but it looks a lot more like bermuda than St Aug. It should be responding to the watering. Is there any chance of a chemical spill or heat damage right there?
