I can't tell you from my own experience but can share a story told to me by a friend. She had the same situation as you and decided to just cut them back to around a foot tall and mulched the heck out of them. She waited until it was cold and the plant was dying back anyway, then whacked it down. Her plants grew back better than ever and she plans to do this every few years from now on.
