I have one and I did not prune it for about 4 years. It became real leggy and there were no blooms this year. This could also be a result of a nearby tree that keeps providing more and more shade... Maybe a little bit of both?

We decided we needed shade on the west side of the house but neglected to note that Indian Hawthornes were there b/c of the sun. We get very few blooms now. I regularly trim 'em back after they bloom-just to keep them below the window ledge. I'd say the blooms are reduced b/c of shade.
