Pruning Indian Hawthorns

Am I wrong in saying that Indian Hawthorns, if pruned at all, should be pruned after they flower?

That's the rule for most flowering plants.

Are there any "real" benefits to pruning? This is the 1st year that mine that bloomed. So I would like to know how to care for them now.

You should only prune to maintain a particular shape. If the shape looks good, then there's no need to prune.

I have one and I did not prune it for about 4 years. It became real leggy and there were no blooms this year. This could also be a result of a nearby tree that keeps providing more and more shade... Maybe a little bit of both? :?:

We decided we needed shade on the west side of the house but neglected to note that Indian Hawthornes were there b/c of the sun. We get very few blooms now. I regularly trim 'em back after they bloom-just to keep them below the window ledge. I'd say the blooms are reduced b/c of shade.
