Once again I have more questions. I have recently planted and ash, cypress, weeping willow, crepe myrtle, silver maple and a pear tree. When do I need to prune them? I live in College Station.

I'll have to assume the trees are small in trunk caliber.

1] Most all pruning is done after the leaves are gone so you can better see the ones you want to remove and less damage to the root system to put on new leaves.
2] Never top a Pear tree as you would a Peach tree.
3] With the Crepe Myrtle, which did you buy. Bush or Tree? How do you want it to look like? Multi-trunk or single?

4] Look up the description of "Trashy Trunk Tree" how-to. If you are going to have to walk under the mature tree while cutting the lawn or having a view beyond the tree, you'll need to remove the lower branches as the tree grows. The basic how-to is to remove a limb or two BUT leave 3"-6" on the trunk. Looks goofy but this will help the trunk become stronger as the tree matures. I prune my young trees this way every two years. As the trunk increases in size I start back at the bottom and remove those first stubs. Bark grows back and you would think there were never any limbs there.
