Hi, Approximately two weeks ago I pruned our red oak to raise up the canopy. It recently has developed these pus-like wounds wherever I had cut a limb. The sap seeping down the trunk from these wounds is sticky, but doesn't have any odor. We planted this beautiful tree about 7 years ago and never had any problems with it (always pruning each year). I did spray the cuts with a black, tar-like protectant immediately after pruning. We live in the DFW, TX area.
Please help us save our tree.
I have great photos showing the problem, but can't seem to attach here. JC

The sap inofitself is a normal and expected sign because this is the time of year when it's active, but the problem is that you just opened up your Red Oak to a wide variety of pests, diseases, and other potential harm, even with applying the sealant.
It's best to perform your pruning on largey canopy trees in winter. People really need to learn and begin applying this.
