We are cutting down a Cottonwood tree at our house...YAY! I think the neighbors are going to have a block party.

The problem is that the cottonwood is currently shading the west side of our house. I was thinking of replacing it with a Shantung Maple.

I read that the Shantung gets to 25 feet tall and 20 feet wide. I've seen photos.

What I'm wondering is: will it be acceptable to plant this tree in the 10' gap between the two houses?

Just in front of the house is a Chinese Pistache. Will only 15 to 20 feet between the two trees be too little space?

It'll probably be just fine. Might have to prune it a bit here and there over the years to keep the branches from hitting the roof, but otherwise, no biggie.

Don't forget Female Cottonwoods are great...




...as shredded hardwood mulch or firewood.

Sorry Ent, I hear that Cottonwoods do not even make good firewood!

Ok. We have a change of direction. Now we are considering the Caddo Maple, instead of the Shantung Maple.

Any opinions out there either way?

Howard was speaking well of the Caddo well before we picked up on the Shatung. I don't think it grows quite as fast as the Shatung, but still not a slow-grower.

It's a pretty tree and a healthy one.
