We bought a house that had 5 trees in the front yard and the Bermuda grass is gone! I planted St Augustine a year ago around the flower beds and have been patiently waiting for it to spread, but the bare patches are getting to me and I don't think I can wait any longer! Would it be OK to lay St Augustine now or should I wait until the spring? If I need to wait until the spring, any ideas on preping the bare areas would be appreciated.

It's been spreading at a fairly good clip but we only put down about 1/4 of the lawn and it's spread to about 1/2. Since the old and new is so obvious now I think the lawn will look nicer if I go ahead and lay the remainder. Do you think I should be patient? Many thanks!

I would probably spend a few more dollars for sod. If you can afford to do the entire thing, fine. Otherwise you could sod the places farthest away from the current St Augustine and let them grow together in the middle. Or you could patch some in like a checkerboard and let it all knit together. Once St Aug is established and rooted, it usually sends runners up to 10 feet per season. You might still get a few feet out of new sod if you do it now. Be sure to roll the sod down for good soil contact and water it like new seed for the first two weeks. It needs that to root.
