We purchased a new home last November. Two silver leaf maples trees came with the house. Both are in the front (required by HOA).
I live in Wylie and we are still under water restriction and can only water once a week. Should I remove and replace the maples with something more drought tolerant. Any tree suggestions?

What exactly is required by your homeowners association?
You are probably asking about replacing them because you realize they are not good trees. This is correct.

It is a fact that trees and shrubs do not require near the amount of water grass requires. This is especially true of native trees and shrubs. Planting them is a great way to conserve water!

Choose a native tree to replace them. Two of the best resources for choosing a tree in this area are "Plants of the Metroplex" and "Texas Trees", both by J. Howard Garrett. Please take into consideration the size of the trees at maturity and plant according to the latest recommendations on this website.

The HOA requires 2 trees. I did purchase Plants if the Metroplex today. This was so helpful. We plan on replacing them with another type of tree and spacing them further apart since we have a large corner lot. Currently, they about 5 ft apart.

Just an FYI on silver maples...most here already know but I didn't until I read & listened!

We had a big silver maple in our back yard-Plano-when we moved in. Lost a few limbs thru the years, we didn't know it was b/c it's a weak tree. Loved the color. It finally died, but gave us some woodpeckers to watch b/4 it went.

Of course, a seedling sprang up near it so we transplanted it to our acreage-60 mi north. THEN I find out they are 'trash trees' or weak trees. Couldn't bring myself to rip it out so we carried H2O to it every week. Well, not enuf-it died in the drought & didn't come back this spring.
Not too sad about it tho.
