Daisy and I churned up the last little piece of grass in our back yard. Before this garden, we just stuck a few vegetables anywhere we could squeze them in our perennial gardens. Our spring garden gave us tomatoes, leaf lettuce, onions, green beans, black-eyes, crowders, lots of okra (5 plants!) and a little bit of squash.

Now, as you can see, the space is small, so we only grew small amounts of the things, but how tasty they were.

For 2009, we are moving to "Daisy Acres" and the beginning of the 1 acre garden! That blog will start soon.

Please tell me how you grew your black-eyed peas. Did you have to have a large trellis for them to climb on? When did you plant them?

The rows you see in the pictures are the peas and green beans. the green beans sprouted first. We did 1 row of black eyes, crowder, and cream. The cream did not do well, but the black eyes and crowders gave us 5 pots that were delicious. This was my first time growing black eyes, and they would have benefited from some kind of trellis. This year we will do them at daisy acres on a much larger scale and will probably use cattle panels to grow them on. Thats how i staked my tomatoes. We planted a little late, mid april.

Where did you buy the beans you planted? I never see them at garden centers.

Most of the seeds I got at Roach feed in downtown Garland. They sell both bulk and packaged seeds. Wells Brothers in Plano also sells bulk and packaged seeds. The packaged seeds were certified organic, but the bulk were not. I will go online this year to buy certified organic seed in bulk.
