We have a beautiful Sweetgum tree, but about a month ago a few yellow leaves began to fall to the ground. The rest of the folage was very thick and looked great. So, basically, looking at the tree nothing indicated a problem. We thought the wind may have broken a small branch to create the yellow leaves or the folage was so dense that some of the tree wasn't getting enough light. However, now more and more yellow leaves are on the ground. Could it be lack of enough water, do we need to apply Lady Bug, etc. or do we have a more serious problem? The root flare is exposed. Please advise. Thanks.

I posted a similar question under a different forum about whether there was a seetgum disease going around. I volunteer at the Tx Discovery Gardens during the Fair and the groundskeeper was showing me how many swwetgum trees he has lost in the last few months around the big fountain. My neighbor just had 2 taken out of their yard after they died.

I wish I could help, but I'm looking for answers too. You might try calling the Dallas County Extension Office and maybe they know.....

Thanks, sandih, for the reply. I will say that other sweetgums on my street look worse than mine. I think I'll just try the sick tree treatment and pray that it is because of lack of water. I'll admit we haven't watered as much this year and I guess it's time for the Lady Bug so perhaps with the help of God, nature and organics mine won't die. Thanks again for your time.
