It's super easy and can even be done in containers! Don't assume that you can grow all types of potatoes here, so find a nursery or feed store that has seed potatoes for this area. I know that North Haven has a red, yellow and white varieties.

Harvest this summer, your own home-grown potatoes!

Last winter was my first for growing potatoes (I put in red Lasota) and they were wonderful! I have been preparing beds, and realized that I need to dig out farther and work the soil deeper if I want more potatoes. Those that didn't have as much room to grow didn't produce as many tubers.

I even have some of last year's potatoes to plant this year (I kept them in a bin of peat moss).

This year I have three types to plant, the new varieties I picked up as seed potatoes at Marshall Grain on Lancaster in Fort Worth.

I have a white Kennebec, red La Soda and a yukon gold. I got them at North Haven Gardens. So excited to be growing potatoes this year!

what kind of potatoes can i grow in an area that never sees cold? our coldest will be low 50's

Don't know about seed. It seems to me that if it doesn't get really cold then you could grow potatoes year round, or at least in a cooler season. Here they aren't planted in the fall, they are planted in the late winter so they can start growing fast as soon as it warms. Last year my planted potatoes went through a week of tremendously cold weather and were still all able to grow and produce.

Be sure you've dug an area and loosened the soil well because they want room to put out the tubers. And keep the potatoes underground, mulch every so often. If they break the surface and get sun they get a greenish cast on that side of the potato and that has to be cut off. Apparently they can develop some toxicity in the green area (like you wouldn't eat the stems or the eyes.)
