Tree is being eaten!

I have an oak tree that's being eaten by some critter from the ground up! There is already a 9-12 gap on one side of the trunk. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I found out that carpenter ants are eating my oak tree! I'd appreciate any helpful advice!
