My son is beset with pigeons roosting over his front porch. It's a pretty high location, difficult to access (him, not the birds). Any suggestions how to run them off?

Don't know the answer, but do not use the high frequency sound deterrents. They don't work. The company I work for installed some and went back to adjust them several times. The boxes made a nice flat nesting surface for the birds.
Try squirting them with water at night when they go to roost. A garden hose with an adjustable nozzle should work. It's cheap, easy and may take a few attempts, but considering the mess they make it will be worth it.
