my elderly mother's lawn is gone. no sprinkler system. Dallas, Tx lots of shade. large oak trees. so we are starting from scratch. land is flat. not sure what the soil is--not clay. kind of sandy loamish perhaps?

1) we can install the sprinks--who's the best value for that in the area if anyone knows?
2) what kind of grass will be best atl east in spring summer fall. too much shade for augustine. what about bermuda, fescue or others that i have never heard of. any new breeds coming down the pike?

Thanks!

Hello,
I am considering installing a subsurface drip irrigation system and then putting Prestige Buffalo Grass sod down. I live in the north Dallas area and my yard is mostly in full sun and has some fairly extreme slope on the front edge. I would like opinions and advise on this idea.
Thank you in advance for your input.
Mike

Is the irrigation for the buffalo grass? The whole point of planting buffalo is because it is native and adapted to this weather. You're liable to kill it with extra irrigation if it isn't used properly.

How much will the irrigation system cost? Instead of that, I'd use the old fashioned hose and sprinkler when needed.

This is just my opinion. Our lawn experts may have more information for you, but when you're dealing with xeriscape plants (like buffalo grass) the rule is usually less water, not more, for it to thrive.

How can you have too much shade for St Augustine? Can you post a picture? The only grass that can stand more shade than St Augustine is called Shadow Turf. It is a variety of zoysia produced by the Turffalo company north of Lubbock. Here is a picture of it growing under a very dense English walnut tree.

Image

This stuff is very plush looking and feeling under foot. The thin areas are on the north side of the yard where the sun never hits. Those thin areas started out as 1-inch plugs, so they have expanded considerably in the 18 months since the yard was plugged. This yard only gets sun for a short time in the afternoon before it disappears behind a tall tree to the west.

birdseye view

this lawn gets about an inch of water twice a week, gets cut to as high as the mower will go once a week and i believe gets fertilized twice a year. we had some green sand put on it about three weeks ago, and we put new plugs in in the fall. its shady most of the day. and on the hill the water runs off so we know that is an issue, but even on some of the flat part it fizzles. we tree trim annually to try and get more sun in. have not aerated in a few years, perhaps we should spray some shampoo on it? thanks!

I see St Augustine lawns like that all the time in San Antonio. Is your other lawn shadier than that? And it was pictures of the dirt and shade that I was asking for.

You are watering too much. My lawn in San Antonio is about that shady and I haven't put an inch of water on it yet this year. We have had some well timed rain recently, but until May we only watered once. I'd be trying to wean it back to once per week maximum and only when the grass looks like it needs water. My sprinkler applies water at the amazingly slow rate of 1/8 inch per hour. When I go back to watering, probably early July, I will start with 3 hours to give it 3/8 inch per week. My soil is crushed limestone ranging from zero inches deep to 18 inches deep where it was filled pretty deep.

Shampoo always helps hard soil. It helps the water to soak in.

The Photobucket links are fine. Thanks.

Thanks David. I know my sprinkers in those pictures are not watering at a slow(enough) rate. I need to measure it and probably slow it down. I will send the other lawn's photos as soon as I can get them up. The other lawn is shadier.

You might get some fescue to grow. Shadow Turf will likely be your ultimate solution.

There are ground covers that sort of look like grass that will grow in more dense shade. Will there be any kids or pets on it?
