My back yard does not get a whole lot of sun. It gets just enough to keep the St. Augustine grass looking decent. I would like to plant a vegtable garden in the Spring, and am not sure which vegtables would do well in an area like this. I don't need a bumper crop, just something for the table :)

What vegtables would you recommend for an area that gets morning shade, mid day sun, and afternoon dapled shade.

Thanks

I know that situation well, unfortunately. Try garlic- it can still be planted, green of all kinds, and peppers of all kinds. Most other veggies need more sun. Try some others just for experimental purposes and let us know if you come up with any new ideas. Good luck.

A general rule of thumb that I read a few years back, is that root crops can tolerate some shade (ie potatoes, carrots, beets, onions, turnips etc), and crops that produce their edible parts above the soil need much more sun.

Peppers do ok in that environment. Salad greens and herbs can be added to the list. The standard stuff like mint, oregano, thyme, chives all work ok. Basil, not so much.

I have heard if you really want to risk it grow some paste determinante (they stop growing at a point) tomatoes in a container. Worst thing that could happen is it might peter out by June. And having it in a container can help you re-locate it as the earth moves on it's axis. (every second counts!)
