One of the (dis)advantages of organic gardening is the abundance of wildlife that is drawn to my back yard...possums lurk, raccoons taunt the dogs, and birds wake me up in the morning! But, yesterday afternoon, I had quite the surprise! I was spot-watering some areas in the back yard, and sometimes I just let water run down into the cracks in the Dallas dirt...well, as I was doing that to one of the "cracks", the crack moved! Not only did it move, it produced a small dark head of some baby mammal with half-open eyes, and next to it, another head! I immediately quit watering that area and sort of moved the dried grass back over the burrow.
My question is this - this is the same back yard that my four dogs visit three or four times a day - and not once have they even sniffed that area that was teeming with little baby somethings! What small Texas mammal gives birth in holes in the ground and is successful in masking the scent from potential canine predators?

Maybe moles? I've never seen one, but hear that they are present in this area.

My bet would be baby rabbits. Pull the grass aside, if they got ears it's a dead giveaway.
