Post subject:  Live Oak Tree - Bark falling off

I am having a problem with a Live Oak Tree (This tree is very big....
est 150 to 200 years old). Very large chunks of bark
are falling off the Tree. It has almost ringed the tree truck about 12
feet off the ground. But the leaves are still green, and the crown is
full. This tree is so old and big, I would hate to lose it.

What's underneath, where it's falling off? More bark? As long as it's not the bare wood (as in deep, living wood) under there, your big old tree is simply ourgrowing the current bark and will be just fine.

My tree is only about 50 years old. The bark is falling off down to the live wood on the west side of the trunk. It still has leaves. Anything I can do to increase it's chances of living?

Sick Tree treatment to improve overall health of tree and soil.

Look for causes such as bad bugs, etc. Foliar feed with Garlic/Pepper tea to keep away the baddies while it's healing.

That's what I'd do.

The tree took a lighting strike, all the bark fell off, now the tree top is turning yellow and the leaves are falling off. I think the tree is dying. I can e-mail pictures if you would like to see them.

Ah, well that's kind of important info there.

If the lightning's path to ground stayed to the outside, then just the bark in that area will fall off, and the branches at the top where the lightning entered will die. You can treat teh tree with the sick tree treatment to boost its health, and that should take care of it. A tree can survive that kind of strike.

If the lightning path to ground went through the centre of the tree, then it's a goner.

The fact that the bark appears to only be coming off one side is hopeful that it was a surface path rather than the core.
