Hello I'm planning some landscaping for a building I own in Waco. The property is near Downtown, maybe 1/2 mile from the Brazos River. I'd like to landscape the place with native mesquite trees. This will be a relatively high pedestrian traffic area, so I think it would be advisable to keep them trimmed so that most of the thorns are above head level.

Any suggestions on how I might best proceed to help them grow? What grasses and other plants are most compatible with them?

Thanks!

Mesquite is a great urban landscape tree.

Existing ones don't take to changes in grade very well. Or so that has been my experience with post construction mesquite in Austin.

It does not transplant well. I have spaded them in the past. Large tap root. So digging is probably out.

There is a thornless variety for sale here in TX and also a variety from Chile that is thornless. I saw them at The Great Outdoors in Austin.

For propagation, pick up Jill Nokes ' book.
