I live in South Keller and I need to replace a Red Oak I killed about two month ago in my front yard. From reading the tree/tree-planting tips above, it looks like I did everything wrong (I really did the exact opposite of every tip). I assume ever over watering or fertilizer killed the first one (I used Bonus-S for St. Augustine a couple of times last year and got within 3 feet of the tree). A little over two months ago, 90% of the leaves turned brown and fell off; then a month later the rest went. I want to start over from scratch with a new hole location…..

Anyone know near the Keller/Watauga/N. Richland Hills area where there's a good/cheap place to buy a new Red Oak (say maybe 8' - 12', and I'll spend up to $350)?

Also, I want to use a new location for the tree (new hole). I want to center it in my front yard. But, I know for sure the hole would be directly over the main sewer line. Would there be any long term problem with doing this?

Anything else not covered in the tree planting tips sticky that I should know?

I have this coming Monday off and plan on getting a new tree in then (it looks like this is a good time of year to do this right?)

Thanks for any help - much appreciated

edit: I'm browsing around some different places looking for more tree planting advice and I've seen it said that buying a younger/smaller tree is better in the long run than planting a larger tree. Should I be looking at a smaller 4'-6' tree? Does size matter? (thanks)

A smaller tree would be good and Green Mamas is right there in N. Richland Hills on Davis Blvd.

McDougall-
I assume when you say a sewer line that you don't mean a septic or aerobic sewer system. If that's correct you will not have a problem. You might also want to try Kings Creek Gardens in Cedar Hill. I can recommend Green Mama's 100% but if they don't have the tree you are looking for try Kings Creek.

Thanks for the replies.

I assume that a tree from a place like Green Mammas would be more expensive that say going to somewhere like Lowes or Home Depot.

Is there any advantage to buying (spending more?) at a place like Green Mammas?

---------------------

My dirt (new home) is pretty compacted. I know that when I dig a hole I get mostly clumps. Should I only use the same dirt I've dug out of the hole, or is it OK to mix in a little loose store bought topsoil?

I'm going to do this tomorrow... I check on the prices and sizes at the stores you mentioned. Thanks :)
