:?: My son has bought me two hibiscus plants for mother' day. One is a double bloom and is shaped like a tree - the other is a shrub and the blooms are single. I need to know what to do to get them through these North Texas winters. I live right on the Red River so my weather is a little different from Dallas folks. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated before the weather turns cold. Thanks in advance.

If the leaves are shiny, it is a tropical hibiscus and must be brought indoors or to a protected area for the winter. A garage may work with heat added on cold nights and supplemental light. These plants don't like to be exposed to temperatures below 45 degrees. Indoors, they will continue to bloom throughout the winter provided you can give them the light they need. Wash them well with a plant soap before moving them indoors to control any critters they might have. Continue to feed them while indoors, just not as often. Move them outdoors once again once night temperatures are into the 50's again. Wheeled dollies are great for moving them around and turning the plants toward the sun while indoors.
