Q: I have a landscaped area in the back of my office that is covered mostly with asian jasmine and there is a cedar fence directly abutting the area where the jasmine grows. The area stays fairly moist and I have been noticing some wet spots on the bottom of the fence where the water obviously stays. There is some fungal growth creeping up the fence (4-5 inches). What can I do to kill the fungus without harming the jasmine? I water only when necessary to keep the moisture down. Any suggestions?? C.S., Dallas.
A: Spaying potassium bicarbonate, orange oil or cornmeal juice will stop the fungus but it will come back unless you soil the drainage problem. Sounds like a French drain is in order or stop watering so much.
