A male argiope spider has built a web across the trash can in my garden shed. I want to move it because I'm afraid it will get killed; someone will unintentionally pitch something into the can before realizing the web contains an argiope. Is it possible to put a stick or broom into the web and move it outdoors to the garden? (I have a 6,000 sq ft organic garden at Lake Brownwood TX). Thank you for your suggestions.

By now you've probably answered that question. What did you do? I had one of those guys (don't know if it was male or female, we tend to refer to all spiders as "she" around here) in a rosemary out front the year they were repaving our street. Every so often their work would bring them right up to the curb where that plant grew, and I'd pop out the door to keep an eye on them. Once they knew I was enjoying this spider (we used to throw Junebugs into the web) they were careful, and every so often I'd see someone go over and lean carefully close to peer at it. :)

We have tarantulas in the yard, and it seems it's past time to start seeing them go walkabout. They'll turn up on the house or in the road or driveway, on their spider autumn adventures. There are holes in the back yard that are always occupied, but I couldn't say if it is always the same spider every year.

We now have another type who, alas, built her web across the entrance to the side door, the one we use all of the time. I crashed through her web when I was taking stuff to the compost last night, and she did a messy repair, but it was completely tidy this morning. She seems to want to be out there day and night (some of these are night only, attracted by bugs heading for the porch light by that door). I got a fuzzy photo with my phone camera last night and sent it on the fly to my Twitter account.
