Does anyone know about something called aspergillus? I have a sample of it in a stabilized dry form that is said to help germinate seed and stimulate root growth. :?:

I am afraid that the only aspergillus species I am familiar with is the one that causes disease in people with compromised immune systems - it causes rather severe lung disease - aspergillus niger.
Aspergillus is a fungus that enjoys a pH of 6.8 or above - sorry I can't be of more help

This is a copy of some info on the website; www.raingardens.com. Hopefully this info will help ID this stuff. Is it good/ok to use??

New! Aspergillus New!

All Natural "Organic" and Completely Safe!

Aspergillus is a natural, completely organic, microorganism inoculate. Beneficial results include:

Healthier and faster growing plants
Faster seed germination
A stronger root system
Improved nutritional uptake with better and more complete utilization of fertilizers
Helps prevent pathogenic bacteria from occurring in the soil, keeping plant disease at a minimum.
This is a people & critter friendly product that is environmentally safe and easy to use.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apergillus Is a Seed and Plant Growth Aid
It contains naturally occurring soil micro-organisms (Aspergillus) stabilized in dry form which help germinate seed and stimulate root growth. Keep product dry, water activates culture.

Directions for seeds: Coat seed with aspergillus before planting. For package of seed, add about one tsp. close package and shake to coat seed.

Directions for cuttings: Coat 2 inches on end of cutting and insert coated end into a pre-made hole in the soil.

Directions for plants in the ground: To inoculate plants or trees already in the ground, make holes around root area and sprinkle a small amount into each hole, refill and water in.

Unlike other Growth Promoting Products that must be mixed and sprayed from every two to four weeks during the growing season, aspergillus needs to be applied just once a year! This product will last indefinitely if stored dry. Click Here for more information and how nitrogen is made from organic matter.

Note: When starting seed, a sterilized starting mix is recommended. Unsterilized soil might contain pathogenic bacteria, which can cause damping off of the seedling. During the sterilization process, however, even the beneficial microorganism are destroyed. Reinstate those beneficial microorganisms by adding Aspergillus inoculate. You will be reinstating some of the lost micro-flora that the seed and newly formed root system need in order to grow into a healthy vigorous plant.

Bottom Line
Less Chemical Nitrogen = $$$
Increased Yields = $$$
Lower Cost = $$$

Notes: Water activates aspergillus.
Keep it dry prior to use.
After using aspergillus, keep it active with moist soil.

I think the species/subspecies they use in the innoculant are fairly effective at stimulating germination and root growth, and they should be fine to use. The test links at the bottom of that Web page show pretty good results, but the site doesn't identify the Aspergillus species that are involved. It's an interesting question whether high(er) fungal compost tea improves germination more than high bacterial compost tea, and if so whether Aspergillus spp. is the/a active ingredient. I would not be surprised if both are true, although I haven't tested high bacterial tea for seed germination.
There are lots of Aspergillus species/subspecies/strains with a variety of types of activity. One of the less desirable ones is Aspergillus flavus, which generates aflatoxin in some field crops (but the EPA has registered a variant of it for use in reducing aflatoxin in cotton). As an aside for organics, I've seen one study where vinegar/acetic acid was used to control Aspergillus flavus in stored grain to limit/prevent mold -- much safer than the synthetic fungicides that they might use. One would assume that the seed stimulant product you mentioned is not mixed with/contaminated by the less desirables. I imagine they it is cultured from pure samples of the good ones without the bad ones and that it is safe and effective.
