I was wondering how safe Boric Acid is. I've seen many sites offer home remedies to kill pests by mixing Boric Acid with other products. Is this a good idea?

Thanks for any help!

Small amounts of boric acid is safe but animals and children can not come in contact with this product. There are premixed formula's for prevention of termites and other "bugs".

I use boric acid mixed with sugar to attract and kill ants in the house.
I use boric acid mixed with bread dough and onions to attract and kill roaches in the house.

Outside around my garden and compost piles, I love both insects. They are all great decomposers.

Boric acid seems to be one of the safest dusts you can use to kill cockroaches. It is extremely effective indoors or in a garage. Don't use it directly on soil, though. Boron poisoning can happen very quickly and seems to be irreversable.

Just adding to an old post. When I renovated my house, I spread copious amounts of Boric Acid in the walls, Everywhere I could, then covered it up with the sheet rock. I have not had an insect problem it three years. The Boric Acid is great at killing ants, roaches, etc.. it is inert, and just stays there. The only precaution I have is use a respirator when spreading, the dust can be harmful if inhaled. I thought the Boric acid thing was just another wives tale as my mother in law told me about it after reading it in the Helpful hints from Helouise column. She was right. IT WORKS.
