Mr. Garrett,

I receive your e-newsletter and forwarded a copy of the recent info on Canola oil..below is an excerpt from another family member on his retort of your article, listing an article from the Mayo Clinic w/ FDA substantiation...just wanted to offer another view point and get your take on both the comment and the following article. thx, tstex

"Not sure what the Dirt Doctor Show is but the article is very misleading and at the end of the article it appears to be a marketing advertisment for GHEE. I have attached an article from the Mayo Clinic Nutrician Dept which is probably recognized as better medical resource than the Dirt Doctor."

Canola oil: Does it contain toxins?
I read an article on the Internet that said canola oil contains toxins that are harmful to humans. Is this true?
Answer
from Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D.
Health concerns about canola oil that are being circulated on the Internet are unfounded.
Misinformation about the safety of canola oil may stem from the fact that, years ago, oil was produced from the rapeseed plant. Rapeseed oil contains very high levels of erucic acid, a compound that in large amounts can be toxic to humans. The canola plant was developed by natural crossbreeding from the rapeseed plant. Canola oil is produced from canola plants, not rapeseed plants. Canola plants have very low levels of erucic acid.
Canola oil is generally recognized as safe by the Food and Drug Administration. In fact, canola oil is very low in saturated fat and has a very high proportion of monounsaturated fat, so it's a healthy and safe choice when it comes to oils.

The brainwashing of the consumer continues onwards......
GRAS & FDA - just another con job on the public.
Amer. Heart Association - founded by food industry as a rubber stamp of their bad science...........

For thousands of years, mankind has subsisted on traditional fats - be they saturated or monosaturated fats. Only in the last century has the issue of poly-unsaturated fats become a staple of the consumer diet.

Oddly, with the increased use of poly's (sounds like polymers!!! to me), there is a corresponding increase in the rise of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). CHD was almost non existent in the medical journals of the early 1900's, and or history. Without the modern processing facilities and chemicals (hexane & others) to extract the oils, poly's could not be MANUFACTURED. Natural oils are pressed from natural products.

Regardless of what the "bad (paid) science" says, or has purported to claim in their biased studies, canola is not a good choice, nor it is totally free of side effects and problems. While modern (GM)) canola oil is better than the original due to reduced erucic levels, it, like soy, is a cheap and inexpensive alternative for the food industry, and costly in the long run for the health of the consumer.

The whole issue of Omega fatty acids (3 & 6) and the fact that it is a monosaturated fat are being touted as the saving grace of canola oil. This is in part due to the lowered erucic acid levels in the current GMO modified crops, but are still not without side effects on the heart and vascular system. In fact, according to the article below, a person can receive an ample supply of Omega acids from foods containing saturated fats.

The following article on Canola explains the history and science behind Canola oil and its introduction as a food.

The Oiling of America - Here's another that will raise your blood pressure on the history of the introduction of poly-unsaturated fats through paid science and specific legislation by the food industry. The history of the American Heart Association, is also telling on how it rubber stamps the BS they perpetrate.

I object to your fear mongering and using pseudo-science and misinformation to sell products. The piece on canola is a prime example. The alleged health problems with canola are nothing more than rumors. Edible canola is a different plant from the rapeseed used for fuel. It is also a fact that canola contains much less harmful erucic acid than non-edible rapeseed oil. You offer not one single reference or source of data for your allegations, yet you propagate these dubious claims in order to close out your piece with a blatant pitch for an alternative product. That is, in my opinion, not right..

I don't doubt that there is a possibility that, over time, problems may be found with canola. I'm in no way a canola proponent, nor am I a fan of the organizations who promote canola, or of GMOs, nor do I consume canola myself. I prefer olive and other oils. But you know, olive oil has, like rapeseed oil, been used as a lubricant, a soap ingredient, and a lighting oil, for thousands of years. It too, then, is an "industrial" oil. The fact that it has many uses doesn't change its edible qualities, does it?

Sincerely,
Owen E. Dell, ASLA

The statement about mustard gas makes me seriously doubt everything else in the article. Mustard gas it not related in any way to the mustard or rape plant. It just kinda smells like mustard.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate your feedback.

I have to concur with both Owen and Stu...I beleive that anything that is highly processed and additives become one of the main ingredients, then no matter how organic you start, you have lost the fight...corn converted to corn syrup is a prime example.

I too love both olives and olive oil...nothing wrong with either, but you can use it for diff purposes as well. However, trashing one product unfairly, to sell another, does not appeal to me in the slightest.

Thanks again guys,
tstex
