The neighborhood cats are using my 2 garlic beds as litter boxes. the beds are well composted & covered with shredded bark as insolation The dog thinks they are leaving him treats. Will ground Cayenne pepper take care of the cat issue and will it hurt the dog if he gets a mouth full?

Both dogs and cats will not like a snoot full of cayenne pepper. Should be just fine. Let us know how it works.

sorry to post on your topic, but I have a question for garlic mike. Mike I have some ojo rojo garlic planted and they seem to be almost ready. I've pulled about a third of them because they were starting to fall over and the foliage had browned up more than 1/2 of the plants. I have several other varieties that are just starting to brown at the tips (marbled purple stripe metechi variety). The metechi started sending up scapes about 2 weeks ago and I clipped them off of about 1/2 of them, the rest I'm going to leave to see how they differ at harvest. I just heard your discussion with Howard about the ones you cut the scapes off of were busting out of the skins, so I need to check the ones I cut the scapes off to see what's up. I'm worried about leaving the ojo rojo in the ground too long since we are supposed to have a lot of rain this week. The ones I pulled had good size bulbs, but none had the red color so wasn't sure if they needed some more time to color up?
thx Tar

Sorry for the delay,i'm not Y2K compliant. What i found is if you cut the scrape before it open, 'it causes the wrapers to split from excessive clove size.Allow the scrape to open and spread a bit before cutting. If you intend to use the plant for seed stock, cut the scrape just as it sprouts. That has resulted in the largest cloves for me.Be sure to cure them in the dark.Sunlight causes greening of cloves and encourages more splitting of the wrappers.I hope i've helped.I will keep a closer eye on future post.
