I have heard Howard say many times, don't prune cm except for dead or damaged limbs. However, I have two situations that have been caused by tree growth that need some attention. #1 two pink cm, one is tonto, not sure on the other one. Both are 12-14 feet tall and 6-7 feet wide. They are situated toward one end of a primarily rose bed. They are creating too much shade and have just gotten too large for the bed. I would like to trim their width some and also give them some what of a topping. Is there a suggested plan for this type pruning?
#2 many, many years ago I was given 11 cm's with no identification. I new nothing about growing them at the time and so I planted them about eight feet apart in a line to provide a buffer from an unsightly pasture. It turns out four were white and seven were lilac. They are mixed and the whites, which you know get quite large, are dwarfing the lilacs. After about 25 years the whites are beginning to have an effect on the smaller lilacs. The lilacs have barely bloomed the last three years and there foliage is suffering as well. Suggestions as to what to do? Even though the whites are not scattered evenly we loved it when all are blooming.
If there are some things we could do this fall or winter on either situation we sure could use the help.

Again, as with the shrubs next to the house, you may decide the way to let some thrive is to thin the line of crape myrtles. If the whites are large and happy, perhaps taking out the nearest lilac shrub on either side? Or you could remove a few of the outer stems or prune the whites. Howard doesn't like it when you lop off the tops of the shrubs, but they're your plants, so figure out what will let the most of them thrive. And I hope you'll post photos!

The trees are spaced w, w, l, l, l, l, l, w, l, w, l. So thinning some out would take some thought, but it might work and make all healthier and more bloom productive. My luck on posting photos from my iPad is not good.
