Tar,

I love Growing Power, I've been keeping up with them for a while--good stuff.

We are in Zone 8 too, and I have 1 2X12 outdoor trench, and am building 2 more for an additional 48 square foot of space. My plan is to surround the trenches with enough hot composting "stuff" to provide ambient heat when it is going to be cold. Also, when it is forcasted to get really cold, I will probably have fresh horse stall waste to add to the 1/2 of top of my trenches)--worms can migrate too or away from this zone as necessary (fresh coffee plus a good brown would also work). In our zone, freezing is usually such a short lived event, that I hope most of the worm population will be ok with a natural heat source.

I am on http://vermicomposters.ning.com/ and it is an amazing website that has groups dedicated to continuous flow-through worm bins, outdoor composting, vermigardening, and all things worms. There are pictures and plans for everything, including heaters. I suggest checking it out, you will get lots of ideas.

I've had mixed results this fall. My peppers, particularly the Tabascos, have gone Little Shop on me. The Tomatoes had the blistering heat, then the wet and now some decent weather and I have a lot of fruit but nothing ripe yet... give me a couple weeks there first frost!

My Tomatoes - these are heatwave and Sunmaster planted in August.

The Tabasco pepper bush is crazy - like thousands of little peppers and they are wonderful: chop up just one of these little buggers in your food instead of the sauce....

Three kinds of Basil here: Purple, Genovese and Thai

These peppers are interesting: Start sweet but toward the stem they get a kick... like an angry mule

These are for the unsuspecting boys who follow my daughter home, I casually offer them one and they run home crying:

Found the biggest dadgum hornworm in history the other day, if you look you can see his handiwork on this tomato plant

The mocking bird seemed to enjoy him, as did the other mocking bird who played out an aerial tug of war for the monster sized tomato vandal
