i am new to this area, south central oklahoma, and am having a problem getting a good lawn started. the soil is sandy and does not seem to have alot of dirt. my yard is very shaded and i can't get grass to grow very good.what shoud i do?

Allen, you might try posting this in the lawn care forum on this board - you're much more likely to get helpful responses. Is it pretty much bare soil right now or scraggly grass? If it's bare soil, I'd say put down a one-inch layer of compost and try to work it into the soil and then seed St Augustine. If you have scraggly grass, then 1 inch of compost would suffocate it, you'd have to start with just a quarter of an inch layer. Other than that, I'm not much of a lawn person - there are others here who can give you more and better advice!

If you have shade and are unwilling to remove it, the only grass that might work is St Augustine. Unfortunately you might be a little too far north for that. How about a ground cover? Some are evergreen even up there. Does the area get any foot or pet traffic?
