The Greater Sage-Grouse is found in Wyoming, Idaho and nearby states. The males try to attract females by displaying in leks. Too late for nesting but I hope to see them on a trip to Yellowstone in August.

A friend took a video of males displaying earlier this year. Be sure to watch the slow motion section.

Grouse are birds that I've often heard but not seen. I grew up on the west side of the Cascades in Washington State where we had Blue Grouse in the mountains. I saw a few because they felt safe up in their large trees and if you looked around you could find them.

I was a mountain climber and remember the occasions when newcomers to the mountains would hear the low call of the Blue Grouse and be told by someone in the party, with a straight face, that they were hearing the "Great Thumping Owl."
