Hi folks,
I switched from synthetic lawn care products to organics a little over 2 years ago, and am very pleased with the results. However, I want to make sure I am using the best products I can get for the lowest price. The city I live in offers free compost to residents, which I used this spring on my lawn. This compost is made using the recycled materials of city residents and public areas. Since these materials most likely are not organic, is the compost made from them OK to use on my yard? When I applied it, there didn't seem to be much life in it - it was more like ground up mulch. If you have any recommendations of where to purchase quality, organic compost in the Mesquite area, please let me know.
Thanks for your help.

I am not a big fan of municipal compost. Usually it is not screened, which means you get large pieces of material that won't be fully composted for at least a year. If yours looked ground up, then it might be of better quality.

Regarding whether the stuff going in was organic or not, I wouldn't worry. The only worry would be for the use of a product with picloram or clopyralid in it. Those are two highly persistent herbicides used on certain kinds of forage to kill everything but the grass. It would not normally be found in municipal compost.
