I'm looking for an alternative to the liquid molasses being sold in the various organic shops around the DFW area. They are selling this stuff for $13-$15 a quart. I can buy "Grandma's Original" molasses for about $4 at Wal-Mart. It's unsulfered and claims to be all-natural.

If I add a 10 oz jar of this to warm water to make a quart, it is about the same viscuosity as the horticultural stuff.

Does anyone have experience doing this? I'm a cheapskate and would like to use this if it's a reasonable alternative.

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

Call around to feed stores and co-ops to see if you can find someone who sells it in bulk. Price depends on the current wholesale price. If you bring your own container, I have gotten it for a ten cents per pound. That means a gallon cost $1.10. If you are looking for cheap, you can't get it cheaper than that.

Call this number 214-577-2194 for Blackstrap Molasses. The guy lives in Collin County. Sold by the gallon. Molasses sold in bulk from Co-op or Feed Stores is FEED GRADE it will have urea and vegetable oil. If you are going organic why buy anything that is produce using chemicals. You can get the molasses from 1 gallon - 275 gallon totes.

I also am new to composting and compost tea. I did start my worm bin just last month. All is well with the worms. So yesterday I made compost tea for the first time. I used about two handfuls of my worm compost although I thought I got all the worms out there were 3 still alive this morning when I took out the compost. Bless their hearts (if they have one). Anyway all I could find was the Grandma Molasses from Wal Mart. I used about two tablespoons. So my question is - Is Grandma's Molasses OK or not?
