Last fall I saw a Howard Garrett show on growing papaya trees. He said start them from seed and plant them in the ground in April. I have managed to grow 4 to be about 2 feet tall. They are so fragile. Did I misunderstand that they will grow in NE Texas to be 8-10 feet tall? I realize this a summer treat in that they can not take the freeze. Frankly I am worried they can't take wind etc.

I believe they'll do fine as long as you don't just move them suddenly outside when the time comes.

I'm guessing you've started them inside, so from there you should give them some time outside preferably in mostly shade for several days, then gradually working them out into the expected exposure over a few weeks. That way you don't shock them.

Same holds true for potted plants you over-wintered inside.
