What kind of shrubs and flowers will grow in and around pine trees? I live in the Aubrey area.

From everything I've learned, pretty much nothing. Sorry but that's the way it goes. Keep the soil covered with mulch and you'll keep down pests but I've never seen anything that can live around them. They're great on their own but not friendly to anything else...just look at the wild ones. Chemicals in their droppings and from their root zone keep other plants at bay so they can survive...nature designed by God. We just have to accept this one.

I grow daylilies under my pine tree and they do great, bloom like crazy and multiply too. They like the dappled shade and don't seem to be bothered by anything from the pine tree. The only problem is if there is a broken branch it will really weep sap in the spring and that hardens once it dries, but I just pick it up off the ground (once it's hard) in big chunks and go on.

Well, dadgum it! I'd forgotten about that! But I think it depends on the type of pine tree too. I remember there were bunches of them growing on the mountainsides back when I lived in Tennessee, around pine trees too. So there you go, zoila3! I have a pine tree in the yard at my new house and I think I'll plant a few at its feet and see if they like it there.
