My neighbor across the street, an old-timer, swears by not planting tomatoes until Easter, but that's in the ground.

The thing is that tomatoes fail to thrive in cold soil, so if you're using containers in a sheltered area where they may get some sun to warm them and can be protected from overnight chills, then planting them now is fine. It's still too early for planting in the ground, though. The trouble with containers is that when we get to the heat of summer you need to keep them well watered and shade the pots so they don't bake the plant roots.

Good luck!
