I have three evergreen sumac that were planted the year before last and still a bit shorter than 24 inches. With the excessive rain that we've had these last months, one has turned completely brown while the other two are seemingly struggling. I think the clay soil holds on to the moisture to the extent that the oxygen is unable to get to the plant roots. Is it feasible to dig them up, raise the bed, which is currently just native soil (clay), and then replant the two survivors in the raised bed? Any suggestions would be appreciated as I hate to loose the remaining two plants.

I only found this question now - the answer is "yes, you could transplant them to a raised bed." Is that in fact what you did? Did the sumac survive?
