I have heard that parts of a Northern Catalpa tree are poisionous. What parts are poisionous and will it be harmful to horses?

I don't know how a norther Catalpa compares to teh varieties down here but as far as I know it would only be the beanpods that are poisonous.

There are 2 catalpas native to the US. The northern catalpa (C. speciosa) is by most accounts the native catalpa to Texas. The southern catalpa (C. bignonioides) is not a native to Texas, it is thought to be native from GA to MS. The southern c. has escaped cultivation from old homesites and can now be found in eastern Texas.

:?: In regards to poision, this is highly suspect. This is probably one of "those" legends where somebody pruned their azaleas, the horse ate the trimmings and got sick, but the person saw them eating the catalpa.

 The seeds of southern c. contain the compounds glycoside and catalpin that have been used for the treatment of asthma, heart problems and spasams (smooth muscle like intestinal spasms).
