I've just moved into a brand new house in Fort Worth and desperately want to start cutting in some beds and planting perennials and hardy evergreen shrubs so the front of the house doesn't look so naked. I've never done any gardening in Texas, so I'm not to sure on when I should start on the planting. Should I wait a few more weeks, or is it fairly safe to start now? I'm an East Coast girl used to some pretty severe March freezes, so any advice is appreciated!

A March freeze is quite possable, even likely, in this area. But, you can start working on your bedding areas now. Use the basic organic program:

and your beds will be ready when you are.

Welcome to Texas Ania!

I think the first thing I would do is pick up Howard Garrett's book "Plants of the Metroplex". It is a well organized book of the best adapted plants for Dallas/Fort Worth. Also, find an organic nursery close to you and become a regular. Those people LOVE plants and are generous with information. If you give us the general area you live we can look this up for you.

Also, look at joining the Dirt Doctor's Ground Crew. The publications are excellent. Listen to WBAP 820 AM Saturdays 11am-noon and Sundays 8am-noon for the best gardening advice!

You will find in Texas the weather is very unpredictable. About the only sure thing is that it will be HOT in August!

Don't be afraid to ask questions here. There are very smart and friendly people here to help.
