I dug a small drainage channel and sprinkled corn meal around the base of my baby clematis (jackmanii) vine after the bottom 3 leaves turned yellow and withered away. I thought there might be a fungus in the soil. Since then the leaves have stopped turning yellow but the vine has turned brown and woody and the shoot has stopped growing. Could I have killed it with the corn meal? It's planted in the shade inside a fence with southern exposure in black clay soil/compost/mulch and was putting on 2-4 inches a day! Any advice to get it going again or should I start over? I don't want to miss out on the flowers this summer.

"My favorite vines include sweet autumn clematis, which is bare in winter but has lots of small fragrant white flowers in late summer..."

Although I do not agree with some of their methods, such as planting the rootball so deep and throwing away greenery in a plastic bag (what is wrong with putting it in the compost pile?!?), you still may find some helpful information here...

Another site:
