Any suggestions for natural methods of ridding the garden of blackberry roots (are they rhizomes?) other than pulling them out as they become a nuisance?

Nope. Blackberries and Bermuda are just like that. Inasive. Not sure about the rhizome part. You can spray the foliage which comes up from the roots with the vinegar solution on the hottest days. Do not be tempted to drench the roots, though. It will not do you any good, and will be bad for the organisms in the soil. In spraying the young foliage, eventually, the energy from the roots will get used up and alas, you will have control!
