I am attempting a patch of St. Augustine to encroach on a large patch of fescue (and associated bare spots). I understand the general mowing guidelines for St. Augustine to maintain a healthy established lawn. However I am wondering if cutting it shorter than normal will encourage more runners and faster spreading.

I placed a plug into a bermuda patch in my backyard as an experiment (since it is cut very short) and it seems to be sending out runners like crazy...anybody have any thoughts?

yes you are correct!

the only thing that you have to be careful of is that when you cut st aug short it makes it less drought tolerant,,,,,so stay on top of the water and push it hard with fert!
