I have several cypress trees that are infested with a catepillar-type bug wrapped in a prickly looking cocoon (just over an inch long). They have already killed two large trees, does anyone know what this type of bug is and how I can get rid of it. There is a lot of other wildlife around so I need something that is a primary killer and will not harm birds or rabbits.

Most catepillars can be eliminated with BT (bacillus theringiensis or something close to that. I'm an Ent, not a linguist)

Making sure not to spray a kill-all type of spray will help too so you can mantain a decent population of wasps and such that eat these catepillars.
