Hi,

Just bought a new lime tree, and a nice new pot for it...

I was wondering how I should take care of it. I'll have it on the back porch in full sun until the winter, when it will be moved inside. Inside it will get bright direct and indirect light all day.

How often should I water and fertilize a tree that is in a pot outside? I want to minimize the shock to the tree when I bring it inside, and then back out in the spring.

Well, in full sun the water needs of a potted tree will be high. I'd advise your potting mix have plenty of lava sand and that you put plenty of mulch atop it. Same organic fertilizing that other plants in pots receive should be fine.

Now, to minimize shock of transfer, both into and out of the sheltered inside, you should take the time to phase it. Call the full exposed area A and the sheltered area B.

Move it from A to B for several hours, then back to A several days in a row. Then let it spend half the day in B. Finally leave it in B for all but a few hours of A. Then it will be ready for staying in B for the duration of the season. Reverse the steps for bringing it back out. Bear in mind, pots sheltered form the sun need far less watering.

Might take two weeks to transition properly, but it's worth babying the tree.
