I have a 12,000 sq. ft. bermuda lawn that has gotten very sparse and consequently is becoming overrun with clover(yellow flowers) and dandelions. I want to reseed in May, and my question is must i kill all the existing weeds before doing so? And with what? Or will the new bermuda crowd them out?I plan to seed the grass, fertilize w/ 9-2-2 poultry, and add a thin layer of BTN. Any advice would be very welcome.

I would like to get to the bottom of the sudden rush of people wanting to reseed or overseed their bermuda lawns. Where did you get such an idea? Are the sports channels telling you that? In all the years I've been on the forums I've never seen one post like that and this year they are on every forum.

Possibly the very worst thing you can do to a bermuda lawn is to reseed it. Why? Because for the most part the seed you can buy is not the grass you have growing. The grass you have growing is probably a hybrid called Princess and the seed you can buy is common bermuda. You cannot buy hybrid bermuda seed.

This winter seems to be the winter that never ends; however, I assure you that your bermuda will take off like a rocket in a week or two. You will be laughing at yourself for even considering reseeding.

I suggest you fertilize now with soybean meal or corn gluten meal at a rate of 10-20 pounds per 1,000 square feet and patiently wait for the grass to explode out of the ground.

For the weeds get a Weed Hound tool. It's about $20 at hardware stores and nurseries.
