A gallon of milk was forgotten in my car when the groceries were brought in a couple of days ago. It was discovered when the stench in the garage was impossible to ignore! The pressure created by the spoiling milk caused it to leak and saturate the carpet in my trunk.

Any suggestions on how to take care of this problem?

Geez, so its the whole garage, not a spill...Guess I'd set out some potpourri, loosly wad some newspapers in the corners...put out pans of used coffee grounds. Burn candles-only when you can watch them.

good luck-Patty

Patty,

Thanks for your reply to my originally vague post. Apparently I wasn't paying attention to what I was posting and left out some very important details. I've edited my post to explain that the mile was in my car and leaked. The carpet in the trunk was soaked with spoiling milk! Ugh.

Ack-OK, guess if you haven't re-soaked the spot yet, I'd do that. Just to try to dilute & get up as much as possible. Then wash again w/vinegar solution. You could try covering the area w/kitty litter too. And/or baking soda. I'll keep thinking...

Charcoal also works well for absorbing odors. Put some charcoal in a container and place it near the spill and let it sit there and it will absorb the odors.

I was going to post this, too. I used charcoal in my car when my friend upchucked his dinner. Smell went away in about a week.
